The Peugeot 208 HYbrid FE (Fuel Economy) features the best of motor racing innovations and technologies, combined with one-of-a-kind, but proven, technological solutions. The result is maximum energy efficiency and a record reduction in carbon emissions. None of this would have been possible without the pooled expertise, energy and imagination that come with project teamwork.
The Peugeot 208 HYbrid FE uses just 1.9 litres per 100 kilometres and emits just 46 grams of carbon per kilometre — a world record for a non-rechargeable hybrid.
With an emissions level of just 46 g CO2/km, or 1.9 l/100 km, on the (UTAC) European cycle, the 208 has exceeeded its original goal of 49 grams per kilometre. And it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in eight seconds flat.

To achieve their goal, Total and partner Peugeot relied on a number of innovations and on applying existing technologies in new ways. Here, Hutchinson’s all plastic and elastomer door seals, a world first.
Total and partner Peugeot’s teams applied their most sophisticated know-how to the 208 HYbrid FE project.
A lighter vehicle.
Thanks to innovative materials, the Peugeot 208 HYbrid FE is 200 kilograms lighter than a standard Peugeot 208.
The Peugeot 208 was redesigned (drag coefficient lowered to 0.23) to maximise its aerodynamics: a small radiator at the front, a flat aerodynamic underbody, streamlined wheel wells, 15 centimetres longer.
All kinds of innovations.
A motor racing hybrid powertrain combined with a completely overhauled engine and gearbox.
Less power loss.
Engine and gearbox oils, lubricants and grease developed especially for the Peugeot 208 HYbrid FE sharply reduce mechanical friction.
Analysing the tiniest detail of properties.
The Peugeot 208 HYbrid FE's 19-inch tyres are designed to have lower rolling resistance. A purpose-developed ultra-low-friction grease allowed the wheel bearings and hubs to be redesigned.
Composite suspension systems, simpler and 20 kilograms lighter.
Hutchinson, a Total affiliate, came up with this innovation that simplifies front and rear suspensions and lightens the vehicle.
Working in synergy.
Total and Peugeot teams worked together closely to develop the Peugeot 208 HYbrid FE. By pooling their talents, the partners won the race against the clock, creating the car in just 18 months.
A Partnership Dedicated to Performance and Innovation
Different Technologies Combine to Create New Synergies
To make it work, specialists passionate about cars threw themselves into the task and pooled their know-how. The result was a high-performance fusion of cutting-edge solutions:
Innovative materials shaved 200 kilograms off the car's weight. For example, a new resin lightened the bumpers and bonnet by half and a composite leaf spring knocked 20 kilograms off the car's total weight.
The power train, an offshoot of the Peugeot Sport 908 project, was redesigned and adapted as a hybrid, running on both petrol and electric power.
Work focusing specifically on lubricants and greases reduced the mechanical friction that causes power losses. A new viscosity grade, 0W12, was purpose-developed.
The aerodynamics and tyre mount were optimized (the vehicle was redesigned to minimize air and rolling resistance). The drag coefficient (Cx) was lowered to 0.23 and air penetration (SCx) to under 0.5 kilogram metres (kg.m).

By pooling their expertise, Total and Peugeot are a winning team. They even exceeded their targets: the Peugeot 208 HYbrid FE uses just 1.9 litres per 100 kilometres and emits just 46 grams of carbon per kilometre — a world record for a non-rechargeable hybrid.
Besides the "technology demonstrator" effect, this project will positively impact the energy efficiency of production vehicles. By 2020, 80 to 85% of new Peugeot cars will include the solutions tested on the 208 HYbrid FE. The first of those technologies — the engine and the lubricant and grease solutions — were incorporated into the Peugeot 208 HYbrid Air, presented at the 2014 Paris Motor Show.
