Total has had a presence in Australia for over 50 years, with a range of interests and activities spanning the spectrum of the energy industry. Most recently it has been an active partner in the growth of Australia’s Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) industry.
Australia, a key focus
Since coming to Australia in the early 1960s, Total has had a number of interests, ranging from exploring for oil and gas to a network of service stations selling Total fuel products, and also holding interests in exploration and production of minerals such as gold, zinc and silver.
Today, Total has large investments in the LNG industry, and is a major partner in two world-scale LNG developments; the INPEX-operated Ichthys LNG project in the Northern Territory and the Santos-operated Gladstone LNG (GLNG) project in Queensland. Total will spend over US$15 billion for its share in bringing these projects to fruition, but we also provide far more than just financial support, with secondees and other Total experts providing specific project management and technical expertise.
Total is committed to Australia, now and into the future. The LNG projects where we are a partner will be operating for decades to come, and we will continue to look at new opportunities that support or complement our existing investments. As a leading LNG producer and marketer, Total has interests across the world, and Australia – which is expected to be the world’s top LNG producer by 2020 – is now a key country for Total globally.
Other interests in Australia
Aside from our LNG investment, Total also has some interests in offshore and onshore petroleum exploration permits and has other key businesses in Australia, including Total Gas & Power that trades in the East Coast gas market and undertakes some power retailing activities; Total Oil Australia that markets our range of premium Elf and Total lubricants; our specialty chemicals company Atotech; and SunPower, a leading solar energy company in which Total has a majority shareholding.
